One of the decisive factors of the high quality of the wine products in Bolgheri is definitely the so-called "terroir”, the alchemy between climate, soil, tradition and culture and the producers’ ability to understand and exploit these potentials to the best of their ability.
In the Bolgheri area, due to the meeting of native soils with hauled-in alluvial soils, several soil types can be identified: In fact, we go from not very deep clayey soils with a “good skeletal style” (as made clear by a recent geopedological study) to deep sandy soils. This diversity makes it possible to produce complex wines that differ from each other.
The conviction that only tart and brackish wines are obtained near the sea is definitely swept away by the wines resulting from the Bolgheri area. Bolgheri’s micro-climate is aided by the nearness of the sea, which mitigates the summer heat and the rigors of winter with its breezes. Furthermore, the wind that blows almost constantly often keeps the sky cloud-free, keeping rainfall low and the sunshine index high. This produces an environment suitable for the development of vines for quality production.
