In the southwestern corner of the Classico zone the Castello della Paneretta has existed for over 900 years. Purchased in the mid-1980's by Maria Carla and Fabio Albiestti, the 312 hectare estate (16 hectares of vineyards) and the old castle edifice began a methodical restoration. The frescos in the castle were cleaned and, where necessary, restored, the meeting rooms were refurbished and the original kitchen was put back in working order. A modern winery was built on the property to handle the production of fruit from the vineyards, which were themselves undergoing renaissance. All facets of these projects have been undertaken with the greatest care, evincing a commitment to thoroughness and excellence.
The southwest position of the vineyards is complemented by their situation in a "bowl" between two gentle ridges resulting in ideal exposure. Paneretta has discovered that the Canaiolo grape variety produces very desirable fruit in their microclimate and includes a percentage of this fruit in most of their blends.
A light egg white fining takes place prior to bottling and the bottles are then laid to rest for 10 months preceding release. The concentrated ruby color and rich fruity fragrance are due in large measure to the presence of the Canaiolo. The bouquet is of intense wild berries with subtle notes of cocoa and spice. The palate is full-bodied with elegant, soft tannins and finishing with a lingering harmonious silkiness best described as "seductive and beckoning."
